Recent Quips from Late Night

“Actually, political experts say that Mitt Romney has the No. 1 thing John McCain is looking for in a vice presidential candidate – an organ donor card.” –Jay Leno

“President Bush says if John McCain is the Republican nominee, he will campaign for him. Well, you can’t do better than that.” –David Letterman

“Former President George H.W. Bush will endorse Senator John McCain for president. They have been close friends since the Civil War and the former president says that John McCain is the only candidate who has the strength, the leadership and the vision to dig America out of this giant hole his son has put us in.” –Jimmy Kimmel

“Did you see Roger Clemens testifying this week before Congress? One congressman named Elijah Cummings called Clemens, “One of my heroes,” and then called him a liar. So, I guess that’s what makes you a hero to a congressman pretty much.” –Jay Leno

“This week in Sacramento, Mexican President Felipe Calderon spoke to California lawmakers. And out of force of habit, they gave him a driver’s license.” –Jay Leno

“On Bill O’Reilly’s show on Fox, Bill O’Reilly does a segment he calls ‘Pinhead or Patriot.’ And today President Bush said, ‘Well, why can’t you be both?’” –Jay Leno

Arabic TV takes a turn for the verse

25 02 2008

ABU DHABI — In the Arab world’s answer to American Idol, the contestants carry prayer beads, the judges are tenured academics and the hostess wears a fuchsia abaya. It is Tuesday night and in a lavish theatre on the edge of Abu Dhabi, the live taping of Million’s Poet, the most popular prime-time show in the Middle East, is about to begin.

Contestants are gathered in a green room, praying for God to bless them with a strong sense of rhyme and metre. The Crown Prince of Bahrain is in the audience. So are several of the ruling sheik’s wives. Most of these poets come from poor Bedouin villages, where their ancient art of Nabati poetry – composed spontaneously and delivered in colloquial Arabic – was slowly dying. Tonight, they will perform for a live television audience and 70 million viewers, competing for a cash prize of one million dirhams ($275,000) and the greater goal of restoring their tribe’s lost pride.

The Browser Choices We Make

25 02 2008

TechCrunch noted Thursday that Mozilla was about to celebrate its 500 millionth download of Firefox, the open source browser that has made inroads into Microsoft’s dominant market share. By this morning, the official Spread Firefox site was claiming an additional 340,000 downloads, putting it over the half billion mark.

That’s an impressive download rate — one that has given Firefox an approximately 17 percent share of the browser market. Looking at visitors to NYTimes.com, a much larger share of our online readers, about 28 percent in February, were Firefox users. The bulk of our online readers use various versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (about 60 percent) and Apple’s Safari (about 10 percent).

New Server Chips Quadruple Memory Capacity

25 02 2008

Startup company Metaram on Monday is expected to announce technology that overcomes traditional server memory limitations and allows users to quadruple memory without adding new hardware.

Targeted at servers, the MetaSDRAM chipset sits between the DRAM module and a memory controller, processing commands and manipulating the controller to allow the system to have up to four times more memory.

The capability of Metaram’s chipset to read the additional memory means memory makers can pack more RAM on a memory module, overcoming limitations that typically throttle the amount of memory that can fit in servers.

Developer pulls out of East Vancouver condo build

25 02 2008

A Vancouver developer has pulled out of a Mount Pleasant condo project — leaving buyers wondering what will happen to their investments.

The Sophia on East 11th Avenue and Sophia Street went into receivership last Monday, according to CBC News. The 81-unit project was about 85-per-cent complete.

It’s not the first time the developer, the Eden Group, has pulled out of a project. In November, Eden cancelled two condo developments worth about $95 million before the buildings got off the ground. About 55 buyers had deposits refunded.
