Google’s move into wireless on display
13 02 2008BARCELONA: Despite its effort to keep a low profile, Google’s presence was powerfully felt at the World Mobile Congress as several chip makers demonstrated the capabilities of Google’s highly anticipated Android open-source operating system for mobile devices.
The prototypes demonstrated Tuesday at the world’s largest mobile conference by Texas Instruments and Qualcomm looked nothing like the sure-to-be sleek cellphones that will initiate the open-source operating system – though no one wanted to say when that will be.
But both U.S-based chip makers agreed that the capabilities should push the marriage of the Internet with mobile devices to new levels as Google staked out its place in the wireless world.

Apple fights back with Aperture 2
13 02 2008After pioneering a high-end photography software niche, then losing ground to Adobe Systems’ Photoshop Lightroom, Apple on Tuesday counterattacked with Aperture 2.0.
The software, like Adobe’s Lightroom, is aimed at enthusiasts and professionals who need to edit and catalog “raw” images, the unprocessed data from higher-end cameras’ image sensors; raw files preserve more detail than JPEGs but require time and specialized software that can deal with the profusion of different proprietary raw formats.

T-Mobile Dumps Google in Europe for Yahoo
13 02 2008T-Mobile announced Tuesday that it will soon begin using Yahoo as its preferred mobile search provider in Europe, ending the operator’s existing relationship with Google for mobile search.
The move was seen by many as a minor coup for Yahoo, which is competing with Google and Microsoft to win the loyalty of a growing number of mobile Internet users. Others noted that mobile search is in its infancy and said the field is still wide-open.
When T-Mobile signed its original deal with Google, it made headlines as one of the earliest partnerships between a mobile operator and a search provider.

Addictive puzzles test your acumen
13 02 2008Forget numb thumbs. Nintendo’s video games strain your brain.
The company has already put out a series of cerebral workouts, but they’ve all been plotless daily exercises with no narrative whatsoever. You check in, do a few memory or math games, then flex your frontal lobe and move on. Sometimes it’s as exciting and fast-paced as a snail marathon.
Now comes a scholarly challenge with an actual story line. Professor Layton and the Curious Village involves a mysterious golden apple, a murder, a spooky tower, a wealthy baron’s last will and testament, and a village full of puzzle-loving eccentrics.

God and the Scientist
13 02 2008God was sitting in heaven one day when a scientist said to Him,
“God, we don’t need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing – in other words, we can now do what you did in the beginning.”
“Oh, is that so? Tell Me…” replies God.
“Well,” says the scientist, “we can take dirt and form it into the likeness of you and breathe life into it, thus creating man.”
“Well, that’s very interesting…show Me.”
So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil into the shape of a man.
“No, no, no…” interrupts God, “Get your own dirt.”
